Awesome observation, Stefan: "Unfortunately movies, by their very nature, cannot portray inner conflict, and so any progression toward more evolved mental states is usually portrayed through brutal and seemingly endless physical violence. In real life, we outgrow evil by leaving it behind, not by engaging in it in spectacular battles. But this cannot be shown in movies. Moviemakers always succumb to the shallow desire for drama and brutal spectacle. That is one of the hallmarks of evil."

@stefbot Couldn't he just have hit home by safely collecting used to death clichés and rounding them up neatly in this travesty of a 'movie'? I didn't watch your whole review because I kept waiting for the spoof to reveal itself but I more and more feared that moment would not come. Hope I was wrong tho..

Love your analysis here, though I have to disagree with your claim that "primitive" peoples are almost always "brutal" to their children. This is generally not the case with hunter-gatherer peoples, and I wonder why you believe it to be true. This is not to say that hunter-gatherers are "noble savages" who are NEVER violent or NEVER brutal. But as a general rule, anthropologists who have studied hunter-gatherers note that abuse of all kinds tends to be minimal, including that toward children.

Maybe it's just me but I didn't feel any of that. The villans were cartoonishly evil assholes and the Na'vi were pure natives who could do no wrong. There was no gray area, no understandable reason behind the villians actions besides simple greed or mindless violence. There was no reason to side with them because they were the sat morning cartoon villians who were evil just because. Stunning visuals but mediocre story.
