    Exposing Christianity

A genuine thread about various arguments against Christianity and ways to debate with Christians.

Here's something from the Bible about the family:

He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.

    Matthew 10:34

Jesus tells you that if you love your own child, your wife, your family more than Him you are not worthy.

    Also:

    New American Standard Bible (©1995)
Do not hold back discipline from the child, Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die

    World English Bible
Don't withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die

Beat your child, it's not like he's gonna die, DUH!

Here's what you can say to someone who claims the Old Testament should be ignored:

So was God's first version of the Bible wrong, and Jesus had to do an edit?
Why are you not listening to the word of God?
"For I am the Lord, and I change not."
"Except sometimes I'm wrong about things. Oops, my bad."

    Re: Exposing Christianity

I have this argument with my brother, who says that Christianity is based on the new testament. The problem with that argument is that to this day the christian holy book still includes the old testament! It's pretty simple I think. If Christians seriously despised the twisted teachings in the old testment than it should have been burned long ago.

The thing is that he calls himself a christian because he loosely follows or believes some of the new testament. This is the exact same way that every other christian behaves. They just take from the bible what they like or what fits their personal philosophy and ignore the rest, while still claimaing that its christianity. There are hundreds of sects of christianity for precisely this reason. I keep asking him at what point you simply admit that it is not christianity and call yourself a spiritualist or something.

I've seen a quote from Jesus himself saying something to the effect that he did not come to replace the old ways and that they are still in effect.  Can't find it at the moment though, I'm no bible scholar.  But that would be a far better thing to counter with..

    Edit 12/6:

Found it!  Matthew 5:17-20 (I think this is actually from the Sermon on the Mount, making it even more poignant):

    The Fulfillment of the Law

17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."
